AEO: answer engine optimization

Being the extracted answer, not the generated one — and why that distinction changes what you write.

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of becoming the extracted answer to a question — on any surface that answers directly instead of returning a list of links. That includes featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants and knowledge panels. It is older than it sounds: practitioners were optimizing for snippets around a decade before generative models arrived.

The distinction from GEO is extraction versus generation. An answer engine lifts a passage you already wrote. A generative engine writes a new passage and may cite you as one of its sources. The first rewards a page that states the answer cleanly in one place. The second additionally rewards being retrievable and verifiable at all — which, for a shop, is mostly a product-data problem.

The surfaces AEO targets

Surface What it is What tends to win it
Featured snippets A passage lifted from a page and shown above the results. A direct, self-contained answer near a matching heading.
People Also Ask An expanding list of related questions, each with an extracted answer. Pages that answer adjacent questions explicitly, not by implication.
Voice assistants A single spoken answer, with no second place. Short, unambiguous phrasing that survives being read aloud.
Knowledge panels Facts about an entity, assembled from sources the engine trusts. Consistent, corroborated business facts — not page copy.

Definitions of these and the generative surfaces are in the glossary.

How much does this matter for a shop?

Less than the industry implies, and unevenly — which is worth saying plainly, because AEO is sold to ecommerce as though it were the whole game. Extracted answers overwhelmingly serve informational questions. When someone types a buying query, Google shows Shopping results and product listings rather than lifting a paragraph from a shop.

Where a shop does win extracted answers is on the questions that surround its products: which size fits, what it is compatible with, how to care for it, how long delivery takes, how returns work. Those are questions you can answer better than any publisher, because you handle them in support every week. The practical move is not a separate AEO programme — it is writing the answers you already give customers onto the pages where they are asked.

That work overlaps almost entirely with making product pages answer-ready in the first place, which is why we treat it as one job rather than two. Product copy and delivery and returns cover the mechanics.

One honest caveat

Winning an extracted answer can cost you the click. If the snippet fully answers the question, many people never visit. For a publisher paid by impressions that is a real loss; for a shop it is usually acceptable, because the questions you win are rarely the ones that end in a purchase, and the brand exposure is free. But it is a trade-off, and anyone selling you AEO without mentioning it has not thought about your business model.

Straight answers to the questions store owners ask

What is answer engine optimization?

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of becoming the extracted answer to a question, on any surface that answers directly rather than returning a list of links: featured snippets, People Also Ask, voice assistants and knowledge panels. It predates generative AI by roughly a decade.

What is the difference between AEO and GEO?

AEO is about extraction — a system lifting an existing passage from your page and presenting it as the answer. GEO is about generation — a language model writing a new answer and citing you as a source. AEO rewards a page that states an answer cleanly in one place; GEO additionally rewards being retrievable and verifiable.

Does AEO matter for an online shop?

Less than for a publisher, and unevenly. Shops win extracted answers mainly on informational questions around their products — sizing, compatibility, care, delivery and returns — rather than on transactional queries, where Google shows Shopping results instead. It is worth doing where you already have the expertise, not as a separate programme.

Is AEO just SEO?

Google’s AI-optimization guide says that from Google Search’s perspective this work is “optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO”. The practical distinction is one of emphasis: AEO asks you to answer a question in a self-contained, extractable passage rather than to build a page that merely ranks for it.
