GEO: generative engine optimization

What the term means, how it differs from AEO and ordinary SEO, and what it actually requires of a product catalogue.

Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of getting a page or product cited inside an answer that a large language model generates — in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini or Google’s AI Mode. It has three parts: making pages retrievable by the crawlers those systems use, making product data complete enough to be verified, and writing pages that answer a buyer’s question plainly enough to be quoted.

The term is barely two years old and is used loosely. This page is an attempt to say what it means precisely, what it means for a shop specifically, and — the part most GEO pitches omit — which popular tactics the search engine itself says are unnecessary.

GEO vs AEO vs AI SEO vs classic SEO

These are routinely presented as synonyms. They are not, and the differences decide what work is actually implied when someone quotes you for it.

How an assistant actually picks a shop

Most GEO advice skips this, and it is the part that explains why the boring fundamentals dominate. When someone asks an assistant where to buy something, the model does not consult a memorised ranking. It runs a retrieval step — the pattern known as RAG — fetching documents from an index or the live web and then writing an answer grounded in what came back.

Two consequences follow directly. First, a page that cannot be retrieved cannot be cited, however well written: retrieval happens before generation, so crawler access is not one factor among many but the gate in front of all of them. Second, because systems increasingly use query fan-out — turning one question into several background searches and synthesising the results — a shop can surface for a phrasing that appears nowhere in its own copy. Writing every keyword variation onto a page is the wrong response to that; being retrievable and unambiguous is the right one.

The answers that carry links are the grounded ones, where claims are attributed to retrieved sources. That is the whole commercial point: an ungrounded answer may describe your product category perfectly and send you nothing. A citation is the only thing that becomes a visit.

It also explains why product data matters more for shops than for publishers. An assistant weighing which of five stores to name is choosing between claims it can and cannot verify. A listing with a price, a stock state and an identifier that matches the same product elsewhere is checkable. One without is a sentence the model would have to take on trust, and it usually declines.

What GEO means for a product catalogue

Most GEO writing is about articles. A shop is a different problem: an assistant recommending a product has to establish that the product exists, costs what you say, is in stock, and is the same item it has seen elsewhere. That is a data problem before it is a content problem, and it is where the ecommerce-specific work sits.

None of this is exotic. It is the same product data that earns merchant listings and Shopping placements, which is precisely why it is worth doing even if every AI surface disappeared tomorrow.

What GEO is not

This is the part worth reading before buying GEO from anyone. Google publishes an AI-optimization guide that names four widely-sold tactics as unnecessary. Each quotation below is Google’s own wording.

llms.txt is not a lever

“You don’t need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, markup, or Markdown to appear in Google Search.” We add llms.txt because it costs nothing, and we will not bill you for it as a strategy.

Content chunking is not required

“There’s no requirement to break your content into tiny pieces for AI to better understand it.” Clear structure helps human readers, which is reason enough — but chopping pages into fragments for the model’s benefit is not a documented requirement.

There is no AI writing style to adopt

“You don’t need to write in a specific way just for generative AI search.” Rewriting a catalogue into a supposedly AI-friendly register is billable work with no documented basis. Writing clearly, with the specifications and delivery terms buyers ask about, is a different thing and does help.

There is no special AI schema

“Structured data isn’t required for generative AI search, and there’s no special schema.org markup you need to add.” Note what this does and does not say: there is no AI-specific markup. Product schema still matters a great deal for a shop, because it is what earns merchant listings and rich results in ordinary Search and Shopping — and Google separately names Merchant Center feeds as the route to product visibility in its generative features. The honest summary: for Google’s surfaces, GEO is mostly SEO done properly plus an ecommerce data layer. Other assistants are less documented, and anyone claiming precise knowledge of ChatGPT’s ranking is guessing. What can be stated with confidence is narrower and duller — a store that cannot be crawled, priced or identified will not be recommended by any of them.

How to tell whether it worked

There is no rank tracker for a generated answer: responses vary per user, per phrasing and per day. The only measurement that means anything is a fixed set of buyer questions, asked before the work and again after, recording which stores are named. Anyone offering a single “AI visibility score” without showing you the questions behind it is selling a number, not a measurement.
